Talking About Electric Vehicle Range Extenders Development
Apr 28, 2026
Entering the 21st century, as the energy and environmental crisis continues to intensify, energy conservation and emission reduction have been raised to a higher strategic level by countries around the world. As the automotive industry is a major consumer of energy and a major emitter of pollutants, it has become a consensus that, in order to achieve sustainable development, the automotive industry will gradually move toward electrification in the future.
Traditional electric vehicles mainly refer to hybrid electric vehicles and pure electric vehicles. Pure electric vehicles have a simple structure and relatively mature technology, but are limited by the development of battery technology, resulting in short driving range, which currently cannot meet users' travel needs. At the same time, the widespread promotion of pure electric vehicles also depends on the construction and improvement of charging and other infrastructure, making it difficult to promote in the short term. Hybrid vehicle technology is more complex, and its key technologies are mainly mastered by large automakers led by Toyota. Although domestic automakers have achieved some results through years of R&D, the system stability and reliability are relatively poor. Meanwhile, the development of hybrid technology is also constrained by engine control technology and automatic transmission control technology, which are still mainly mastered by only a few foreign companies. There remains a huge gap between domestic and foreign companies, making it difficult for China to achieve major breakthroughs in complex hybrid technology by relying on the closure of foreign technologies, and there are risks in promoting it on a large scale in the short term. Foreign hybrid technology is relatively mature and has already been tested by the market, offering good fuel-saving performance and a high level of maturity. Compared with foreign countries, domestic hybrid technology still lags far behind. If hybrid technology is promoted, the domestic market will be quickly dominated by foreign automakers.
Extended-range pure electric vehicle technology (the vehicle topology is shown in Figure 1) is a combination of hybrid technology and pure electric vehicle technology, featuring a simple structure and easy control.
